Fence around Görlitzer Park: Wegner fights for more security!
Berlin's governing mayor Kai Wegner confirmed the controversial plans for a fence around Görlitzer Park in a citizens' dialogue in Kreuzberg. This park, which is severely affected by drug crime, is intended to become more secure by fencing and nightly closures to ensure relaxing stays for families and other visitors. "I want everyone to be able to move in Görlitzer Park with a good feeling," said the CDU politician. The police recommend these measures to respond to the increasing crime in the area, which is urgently needed as a place of recovery, reports www.merkur.de .
However,Wegner made it clear that a fence alone was not enough to solve the problems. Therefore, additional measures such as more lighting and park care as well as support offers for drug addicts and homeless are planned. While some citizens expressed concerns that a fence could lead to crime crime into surrounding residential areas, Wegner promised to strengthen the police presence in these areas. The construction of the fence is estimated at 1.2 million euros and is scheduled to begin in the spring of next year, whereby ongoing costs for personnel and lighting are added. The district, on the other hand, tried to stop the project in court.
