Straubing Tigers celebrate gripping home win against Skellefteå Aik
The Straubing Tigers made a gap against the Swedish champions Skellefteå Aik on Sunday and made their second home win in the Champions Hockey League (Chl). After an exciting game that went into extra time and finally into the penalty shooting, the Tigers won 3: 2 (0: 1, 1: 1, 1: 0, 0: 0, 1: 0). This result not only demonstrates the strength of the team, but also the unshakable fighting spirit that players showed under the coach Tom Pokel.
Although the Tigers initially fell behind, they were able to turn the sheet. The Swedes were more powerful in the early stages of the game and scored two goals, which threw the mood in the stadium a cloudy light. But the team from Straubing was not beaten: Adrian Klein brought the Tigers back into the game in the 33rd minute with a goal. The second half in particular clearly belonged to the hosts. In a phase with five closed minutes of overpainting game, Cole Fonstad made the much acclaimed compensation to 2: 2.
decision in penalty shooting
The game remained exciting even after the regular playing time. Nothing happened in overtime, and so the players had to prove their nerves in penalty shooting. Here JC Lipon became a true hero in the sixth round when he converted the decisive goal and thus had the Tigers cheered. It was an intensive and emotionally charged game, that testified to the class of both teams and the intensity of the Chl.
The table after two match days shows that the German clubs have gone different ways. While the Straubing Tigers are in fourth place, the Eisbären Berlin are found in twelve and Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven even in 13th place. Only the top 16 teams will make the league in the round of 16. It is important for the German teams to be successful in the coming weeks, because the next preliminary round games are already in a week.
Overall, the great potential of the German teams in the Champions Hockey League showed itself last weekend. While the Tigers continue to consolidate their place as a pioneer, the penguins and the polar bears still have a lot to do so as not to lose the connection to the top positions. The upcoming games are crucial for the further course of the tournament and promise exciting hockey moments.
