FDP wants judge election in the constitutional court: 2/3 majority required!

The FDP in the Baden-Württemberg state parliament has brought a radical proposal: judges for the Constitutional Court are to be elected in the future with a two-thirds majority. This claim was submitted in an application in Stuttgart. The FDP MP Nico Weinmann emphasized that this regulation could better protect the court from extremists and thus guarantee a party-independent judge's election, which would lead to higher democratic legitimation.

The reactions of the other political groups were clear, however. Both the Greens and the SPD rejected the application as not practical. Daniela Evers of the Greens expressed the idea of the idea, but considered a thorough examination to be necessary and warned against anchoring such a regulation in a simple law that could easily be changed. Weinmann countered that the FDP advance is only the beginning and that this regulation should also be anchored in the state constitution before it is too late, as the situation in Thuringia shows.
