Resistance to mobile phone mast in Poppenreuth: Mayor promises comprehensive information

The mobile phone mast in Poppenreuth: Effects on the municipality

The decision to build a mobile phone mast in Poppenreuth causes discussions and resistance in the community. Mayor Margit Bayer promises comprehensive information and transparency.

The city of Waldershof has found that the network coverage in the area, especially in some districts, leaves something to be desired. Therefore, this topic was taken up at an event in 2022. The municipalities were able to report "black spots" on the map below. As a result, the network operators were instructed to submit offers to remove the sparkling holes in these areas. Mayor Margit Bayer explains: "We have reported the districts of Poppenreuth, Walbenreuth and Wolfersreuth as insufficiently supplied, as many complaints have been received by residents and business people in recent years."

The importance of a modern infrastructure

The residents' concerns mainly relate to possible health effects of the mast. The proximity to the sports field, playground and residential area is considered critical. According to the Federal Office for Radiation Protection and the State Office for the Environment, there are no health concerns in the current limit values. In larger cities, mobile phone masts can be found every 200 meters. Mayor Bayer emphasizes that it is her duty as a mayor to ensure a modern infrastructure. In the past 30 years, the legislature has not determined any harmful effects by mobile phone masts.

alternative location search and information event

The search for a location for the mast began in 2022 after there was no feedback from private property owners. The urban properties in the search area were therefore examined in more detail. A location on the outskirts in the area of the soccer field was finally selected. Despite the initial approval, after two years of concerns and resistance to the population against the project. The city is now looking for an alternative location to meet the concerns of the citizens.

On September 11, 2024, there will be an information event for the citizens of Poppenreuth, Walbenreuth and Wolfersreuth. The project and alternative options are presented there. An independent expert from the State Office for the Environment will provide detailed information and answer questions. Finally, the city council will have to decide whether and where the mast is built.

The mayor assures that an immission report is commissioned in the event of a mast construction to check the electromagnetic fields in the area and to ensure maximum clarity and security.
