Burglary in Gerswald library: Such vandalism shocked!

On August 5, an incident occurred in the Gerswalder library, which not only shakes the local community, but also raises questions about security and the state of public premises. Mayor Eva-Maria Meister (CDU) expressed her incomprehension over the events after visiting the destruction and described the situation as a "disaster".

Damage in the children's library

In the children's library, the employee Marlies Bechly and other helpers found a devastated environment. Drinks that were prepared for the upcoming “stubble market” were distributed on the floor, while the perpetrators did not shy away from destroying two windows and the large glass door. There were cigarette butts and empty cigarette boxes between the broken glass and the leaked drinks, which not only endangered the sight, but also the safety of the children's library. "A fire could have broken out very easily," said Bechly.

The consequences for the community

The effects of burglary affect not only the library itself, but also the local group of folk solidarity, which uses premises in the same building for their meetings. "Everything was messed up," said a committed helper in memory of the state after the incident. For many, the library is not only a place of reading, but also a social contact point that is now faced with the challenge of fixing the damage caused.

The insurance and the case law

In addition to the resulting physical destruction, this incident also raises questions about financial security. Mayor Meister said that although there is insurance for such situations, this does not arise for all damage. This means that the municipality may remain seated on part of the costs. The population is concerned about how often such incidents are in the region, because it was not the first slump into the library.

Police message

The police were informed by the community on the morning of the incident and was able to arrest a 17-year-old on site who was just trying to flee through a window. Interestingly, this young person had previously been reported to be missing, which raises additional questions about his situation. This could indicate that various social problems are linked.

The break-in in the Gerswalder library shows how important it is to protect public institutions and to mobilize the community. The citizens and the city administration are now called to work together for a safe environment and to preserve the library as an important part of cultural life.
