Dismantling of the pedestrian bridge: Ulm is initiating redesign
Ulm is experiencing a further change in his traffic architecture. Last weekend a pedestrian bridge was demolished, which was part of an old bridge ensemble over Kienlesbergstrasse. This measure contributes to the continuous modernization of the infrastructure and has an impact on residents and traffic in the region.
Historical Bridge is torn down after decades
The bridge, which was built in 1969, was the last remaining pedestrian bridge from an ensemble of three bridges. Since two of the bridges have already been demolished in recent years, the current demolition represents a further step in the upgrading of the area. The pedestrian bridge, which is over 50 years old, was no longer important for general traffic, since it led to a branch of the club action and only served a few pedestrians.
A hard cut: Technology and procedure for demolition
In order to handle the rubbing off the bridge as safe and efficiently as possible, it was broken down into its individual parts. Since the shape of the bridge did not allow conventional demolition, specialized techniques had to be used. The bridge was carefully sawn into pieces to prevent tipping from being stopped. A mobile crane was used to take off the individual parts on the floor, where they were then shredded and removed for recycling. The underlying abutment that supported the bridge were also removed.
Effects on the environment and future plans
The associated departure from the Wallstrasse bridge was closed during the demolition to ensure the safety of the workers. At the same time, the area began to be renaturated, which benefits the environment and could possibly create new areas of stay for citizens. The demolition of the bridge is part of a wider tendency to modernize urban space and shows the commitment of the city to create safer and more contemporary traffic routes.
Future projects for traffic safety
In parallel to these developments, the work on the Gänstorbrücke, which Ulm connects with Neu-Ulm, began. This bridge breakdown, which will also take place in the coming months, is strategically planned to maintain the flow of traffic during the construction work. The completion of this project is planned for 2027 and is expected to significantly improve accessibility between the two cities.
Through these measures, the city of Ulm not only experiences a renewal of its infrastructure, but also an adaptation to modern requirements with regard to sustainability and traffic safety. In the long term, these developments will help to arm Ulm for the future.
