CDU application for free parking in Waldshut fails: What now?

Waldshut-Tiengen, Deutschland - In Waldshut-Tiengen, parking in public parking spaces from 4 p.m. should be offered free of charge between December 1 and 24 to support local trade in the run-up to Christmas. The CDU application, presented by Nathalie Rindt, was rejected in the local council. The costs for the city were estimated at around 13,000 euros, accompanied by a further 2,000 euros by voucher purchases. Despite the support of some members, the rejection came unexpectedly, especially from Mayor Martin Gruner and other factions, which expressed concerns about the traffic situation.

Jörg Holzbach from the Free Voters suggested that the measures to be moved to January and Petra Thyen from the Greens supported the use of buses instead to win customers. Claudia Hecht from the SPD was also skeptical and advocated free parking exclusively in the parking garages so as not to continue to burden traffic in the city center. As a compromise, the topic to promote the inner city trade should now be entrusted to the new city managers who start in November and are again on discussion in the first quarter of 2025, as reported www.suedurier.de.
