Water removal ban in Waldshut-Tiengen: protection for water and groundwater

increasing drought leads to restrictions on water withdrawals in Waldshut-Tiengen

The Waldshut-Tiengen region faces a new challenge: In view of the increasing drought and the resulting effects on water ecology, the administration has now decided to restrict the removal of water from surface waters. This measure, which came into force with a legal ordinance on 07.08.2024, is a reaction to the changed climatic conditions and the long dry periods in the past two decades.

origin of the problem: climate change and lack of precipitation

The regional -specific investigation notes that since 2013 there have been hardly any significant rainfall in the region that could contribute to resuming the groundwater reserves. The first state official Tina Schlick explains: "The last two decades impressively show that climatically changed conditions have arisen. The summer months in particular become hotter and drier, while the winter tends to be milder, which is noticeable in the water balance." These changed weather conditions have a negative impact on groundwater reserves that are close to the surface and also on deeper groundwater conductors.

consequences of the water shortage to water ecology

One of the most serious effects of the drought is the drastic reduction of the water flow in small rivers. Many such waters lead very little water over months, which can endanger water ecology in the long term. The connection between groundwater and surface waters becomes clear: a sufficient water level is not only crucial for nature, but also for the drinking water supply of the population.

restrictions on water withdrawals

In order to protect the living conditions in the waters and promoting natural resilience, the new regulation provides that the removal of water from all above -ground waters, including rivers, ponds and lakes, is prohibited as soon as a critical water level is reached or subordinate to three specified reference levels.

where and when are the regulations valid?

The regulations apply in all municipalities of the Waldshut district, especially for the waters in St. Blasien (Alb), Lauchringen (Wutach and Kotbach). Exceptions only exist for water withdrawals from the Rhine and other legally permissible withdrawals. The current water levels are available via an online platform or a telephone hotline, which enables residents to actively inform themselves about the situation.

The meaning for the local community

These measures can not only be seen as an answer to the environmental problem, but also as a necessary step to protect the habitats in the region. The municipality is asked to deal responsibly with the limited water resources in order to ensure both nature and its own water needs in a very sustainable manner. The protection of the water and groundwater is of essential importance for the future of the region.
