After renovation: Nauroder Backes shines as a place of community
An important moment for the Naurod community recently took place in Wiesbaden: the listed bakery, lovingly called "Gemaa Backes", was solemnly reopened after extensive renovation work. This event not only emphasized the historical value of the house, but also underlined the importance of traditional craftsmanship and feelings of community.
a place of community
The Mayor Gerd-Uwe Mende (SPD) emphasized the role of the back during the celebrations as a "real gem" for the local community. He emphasized that the bakery is not only a place of baking, but also a symbol of identity and appreciative handling of food. The return of the back gives the residents of Naurod the opportunity to come together and to be active together, to experience the craft and to learn more about the art of bread baking.
renovation of the back
The renovation had become necessary because the roof was leaking. Over a period of five months, from September 2023 to February 2024, the building was thoroughly revised by urban craftsmen. The costs for the repair measures ultimately amounted to 115,000 euros, which was above the initially estimated 100,000 euros. This investment reflects the commitment of the city of Wiesbaden to preserve the cultural heritage and maintain the associated traditions.
tradition and future of the bakery
The bakery has an interesting story. Originally a fire service equipment house, in 1980 it was converted into a bakery by committed citizens. This was done against the desire to continue using the building as a storage room. Since then, the Backes has been an integral part of the Naurod tradition, including the annual backdes festival, which celebrates its comeback on Saturday, August 17th. On this day, all interested parties have the opportunity to visit the newly renovated premises and enjoy the handmade bread and cake.
bakers and supporters are committed
Back art is also carried on by the committed members of the Naurod interest group. Under the direction of Ingo Best and the experienced “baking master” Bernd Beelschmidt, numerous breads were baked for reopening. The aim is to invite school classes and other groups for baking in the historical environment of the bakery in the future to pass on knowledge and tradition.
The importance of traditions for local culture
Such a project illustrates how important it is to preserve cultural traditions and at the same time give young generations the opportunity to actively participate. The revival of the Naurod Backes not only promotes local craft, but also the community cohesion, which is often lost in times of digitization and urbanization. It is a place where memories are created and people come together to revitalize old customs.
