Several dog bites in the Wittenberg district: urgent call for dog driving license

In the past few weeks there have been several troubled incidents in the district of Wittenberg with dog bites that make the population listen. On July 8, a 28-year-old woman in Coswig was bitten into the shoulder by a shepherd mixing breed. Just five days later, an 81-year-old woman in Wittenberg experienced a similar, alarming situation. The following Saturday, a parcel messenger in Griebo was the victim of a dog bite. These incidents have sparked an intensive discussion about the need for a mandatory dog license.

Again and again, the question is raised in such discussions whether dog owners should provide a kind of proof of their skills in dealing with dogs, comparable to the driving license for cars. Theoretically, a dog handler could contribute to creating more responsible owners and thus lower risks in dealing with dogs. In order to show different perspectives, we have obtained expert opinions from an experienced dog trainer from the region.

The expert judgment

The dog trainer who specializes in training more difficult dog types emphasizes the importance of training and responsibility. "A dog driving license could be a sensible measure to ensure that future dog owners learn the necessary knowledge of their dog and over general behaviors," he explains. He continues that the basic training of a dog and the upbringing of its owners can lead to a better understanding and thus to fewer conflicts.

In addition to the coach's opinions, the perspective of the veterinary office was also obtained. This institution focuses on public security and is also a key player in this debate. Representing employees of the veterinary office expressed that they consider the incidents as a serious problem and estimate that preventive measures, such as a dog license, could be an effective solution to reduce the risk of dog bites.

PETA, the animal welfare organization, sees the problem from a different perspective. According to them, the key is not only rooted in the hands of dog keeping, but also in dealing with people with animals. In a statement, you emphasize that responsible dog education and better education about dog behavior are fundamental in order to avoid such incidents. PETA demands more education and sensitization for all dog owners - regardless of whether a dog license would be mandatory or not.

The emerging debate shows that there are many facets that have to be taken into account with regard to the safety of humans and animals. While some argue for a dog license, others appeal for a better understanding of dog behavior to take proactive measures.
