From 2025: submarine U17 becomes a spectacular attraction in the technology Museum Sinsheim

The former Marine submarine U17 found its new home in the Sinsheim Museum Technology after an exciting journey. From 2025, visitors will have the opportunity to look at this impressive exhibit up close and learn more about the fascinating history of naval shipping.

an impressive transport

The transfer of the massive submarine, which weighs over 350 tons and is almost 50 meters long, was a logistical masterpiece. The journey began over a year ago in Kiel and run throughout Germany, whereby the submarine was first transported over water on a swimming pontoon. Later it was transported on a specially designed heavy transporter.

The challenges of shipping

An outstanding event during the transport was the passage under the old bridge in Heidelberg. In order to maneuver the submarine safely under the bridge, it had to be inclined by over 70 degrees; A precise and coordinated handling of the crew was essential for this.

preparation for the exhibition

The museum director Andreas Hemmer explained that the submarine is a significant addition to the history of technology in the Sinsheim Museum. Visitors can not only get to know the technology of the submarine, but also get an insight into the living conditions of the crew during their missions. The detailed explanation of the operating conditions will give an insight into the cramped premises and the challenges of the underwater service.

an event for the community

The transport of the submarine attracted numerous onlookers who were often in groups on the banks of the Rhine or along the transport routes to experience the historical moment. This community event not only drawn attention to technology history, but also established a connection between the people who experienced the event together.

The costs and financing

The entire project cost the museums around two million euros, with the majority being financed by donations. This financial support reflects the public interest and shows the appreciation for the maritime story, which is kept alive through such exhibits.

a rare insight into the submarine story

Now that transport has been successfully completed, U17 will be the second submarine in Germany, which is exhibited in the south of the country. Only U1, the first submarine of the German Navy, can currently be visited in the German Museum in Munich. But its exhibition will be closed by 2028, which gives U17 a unique position in the Marine of Historical Exponations.

The integration of the submarine into the collections of the Technik Museum is not only a memorable moment in engineering history, but also a valuable learning unit for future generations that will get an insight into the technology and challenges of the underwater trip.
