Düsseldorf grabs the title: Berlin loses the congestion crown!
The traffic jam situation in Germany changed significantly in 2023. According to current data from B.Z. , Düsseldorf is now the new traffic jam in the country. While drivers in the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital have an average of a whopping 60 hours a year in traffic-an increase of 22 percent compared to the previous year-Berlin follows with 58 hours. This marks a growing trend, because Germany's drivers only lose almost two days in traffic jams!

The data from the traffic service provider Inrix show that the average commuter nationwide spends 43 hours in traffic, which corresponds to an increase of 3 hours compared to the previous year. An internationally, German road users get away relatively well compared to the merciful conditions in cities such as Istanbul, where you are in traffic for 105 hours on average. Nevertheless, the overall trend remains worrying, since 53 out of 73 cities examined in Germany also recorded an increase in delays. Inrix warns that “traffic growth is unchecked worldwide” and innovative mobility strategies are necessary to efficiently manage daily traffic.
For 2022, the Statistics of Inrix continue to report that Munich leads the list of the most storest cities with an average of 74 traffic jams, followed by Berlin with 71 hours. In global comparison, cities like London (156 hours) and Chicago (155 hours) are at the top of the traffic jam hit list. These developments illustrate the challenges of which urban mobility faces, given the rising commuter numbers after pandemic.
