Finnwal viewing in the Mediterranean: Scientists celebrate the big catch!

In the Gulf of Taranto, a Finnwal (Balaenoptera Physalus) was recently seen for the first time since 2009. On February 28, 2025, researchers discovered the approximately 20 meter long whale, an event that is classified by Jonian Dolphin Conservation (JDC) as a "event of extraordinary scientific importance". The sighting took place about twelve kilometers off the coast and was documented with the help of a drone. JDC is now calling for a protection zone in the area.

JDC is a scientific organization that carries out research into whales and dolphins in the Gulf of Taranto and in the northern Ionian Sea. In addition to the sighting of Finnwalen, the organization aims to protect the living and dinghy cetacen and to promote awareness of these animals. JDC carries out over 250 trips annually, but the last sighting of a Finnwal in the Mediterranean was several years ago.

facts about the Finnwal population

According to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC), only about 1,700 Finnwhales live in the Mediterranean, which are considered to be “strongly endangered”. These impressive marine dwellers are not only the second largest living being on earth, they can also be up to 111 years old. Female Finnwhales can become up to 27 meters long and weigh up to 120,000 kilograms. They filter up to 70 cubic meters of water every day to eat up to 1,800 kilograms of fish. However, Finnwhales face various threats, including underwater noise, ship collisions and plastic waste.

The Jonian Dolphin Conservation is also involved in the Enlightenment about the Cetacen in the Ionian Sea by carrying out educational activities and scientific research projects. In the past, the organization has also received significant awards for its scientific efforts, including first place for "Scientific Research and Technological Innovation" as part of the "Sea Heritage - Best Communications Campaign" Awards in 2013.

laypersons and tourists have the opportunity to take part in dolphin observation activities that are offered by Jonian Dolphin Conservation. The researchers use various devices, such as echolote and multiparameter probes to carry out comprehensive studies on the way of life and the habitat of whales and dolphins.
