Switzerland reacts: German trains now end in Basel - changeover mandatory!

From April 29, 2025, there will be changes in Switzerland for rail travelers from Germany. As the Stuttgarter Nachrichten reported, the Eurocity 7 from Hamburg-Altona to Interlaken Ost and the Eurocity 9 from Dortmund to Zurich in Basel end. This measure was taken due to repeated great delays on the trains. Travelers have to change in Basel, while the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) use extended replacement trains on the remaining routes in the Swiss network.

The Südkurier reported that due to the increased delays of German long -distance trains that hinder the Swiss timetable, some direct connections from Germany to Switzerland are reduced. In the future, only five trains will run continuously, whereby all other connections in Basel have to change. This mainly affects travelers who want to travel without a change. One reason for the delays are late trains from Germany and bridge damage near Frankfurt, which was caused by a truck. These problems were discussed in July 2022 and now extended.

connections and replacement trains

The SBB will, as mentioned, provide replacement trains for the affected connections. Long -distance trains that end outside the regular timetable in Basel are also replaced by replacement trains within Switzerland. Travelers who get in Basel are not affected by these changes, since from Basel trains run in all directions.

  • Some of the limited trains:
    • ICE271 from Frankfurt (5.50 a.m.) via Basel, Zurich to Chur
    • ICE3 from Karlsruhe (5.56 a.m.) via Basel to Zurich
    • Eurocity (EC9) from Hamburg-Altona (6.27 a.m.) via Basel to Zurich
    • ICE79 from Berlin (1:26 p.m.) via Basel to Zurich
    • EC151 (8.06 a.m.) from Frankfurt via Basel, Lucerne to Milan

The CDU member of the Bundestag Felix Schreiner expressed resentment about the current situation and called for solutions to improve reliability in cross-border traffic. The measures to reduce trains were necessary in response to the situation that is prone to the interference and not least because of the Friday delays from Germany.
