Westerstede commemorates Jewish victims: plates are reminiscent of their history!

Westerstede, Deutschland - In Westerstede, individual commemorative plaques are to be attached to Jewish victims of National Socialism in the future. The application for this comes from the initiative "Against the Forgetting", the student council and the youth council. The aim of this project is to create memorial signs of the residential or work facilities of the persecuted. Pupils of the local high school and the high school presented the project that is based on the procedure in Oldenburg.

The cultural committee in Westerstede unanimously approved the application. The first plaque is installed at the city library, which used to be the Polak family's house. Young people plan to ask the district and private property owners for permission for further plaques. Plots of the Meyer and Frank families, who are now owned by the Ammerland district, are also intended for commemorative plaques. Westerstede also recorded a high NSDAP electoral participation of 77.8 % in the Reichstag elections in July 1932.

financing and future planning

The costs for the first table at the city library amount to 1,800 to 2,400 euros and are financed from the education budget of the city library. Future financial support should be planned in the cultural budget. The planning also has to consider memorial plaques for non -Jewish persecuted and murdered people.

On January 27, the commemoration for the victims of National Socialism will be committed nationwide, which is reminiscent of the liberation of the concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz. Like Muenstertube reports, the city of Münster flags at urban service and school buildings on the day of commemoration on half mast with the flags of Europe, the federal government and the country. It is reminded of the 275 citizens of Jewish faith from Münster who have not survived the Holocaust. The day of commemoration is therefore not only a memory of the crimes of National Socialism, but also a reminder of the ongoing efforts for a lively commemoration.
