Wolves in Bavaria: New area rules and herd protection obligation from 2024

Köschinger Forst, Deutschland - Bayern updated the wolf areas! With today's publication in the Bavarian ministerial leaf, the new borders in the damage compensation system will be officially announced. The regulation concerns areas in which the presence of wolves is so clear that livestock holders can demand compensation in the event of damage. Particularly striking: The Köschinger Forst is now being shown as a wolf area for the first time, while the area Zella-Rhön was deleted due to a lack of evidence of the loyalty to the location.

The changes also affect the Grafenwöhr region, where the wolf area was expanded to the northwest. From November 1, 2024, livestock keepers in the newly defined areas, such as in the Köschinger Forest, must take suitable herd protection measures such as wolf -repellent fences in order to be able to assert claims in the event of damage. The Bavarian State Office for the Environment (LFU) advises the affected owners to find out about effective protective measures at an early stage in order to protect their animals and to secure financial compensation.
