FDP under pressure: No invitation to the campaign program in Brandenburg
The political landscape in Brandenburg is becoming increasingly exciting in the run -up to the state election, especially with regard to the role of the Free Democratic Party (FDP). Current surveys show that the FDP is wandering around 1.8 percent in voting and possibly not even making the leap into the next state parliament. In a explosive step, the Bundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB) announced that it will not invite the top candidate of the FDP, Zyon Braun, to his campaign program. This step not only triggered astonishment, but also led to a legal dispute in which the FDP tried to take legal steps against this decision.
The FDP has increasingly withdrawn into insignificance in Brandenburg in recent years. They have not been represented in the state parliament for ten years now. The last surveys show a dark picture for the liberals, which in autumn 2025 should only be 4.5 percent in a nationwide election. In a serious blow, the party tried to contest the decision of the RBB in court, but the administrative court in Potsdam rejected its urgent application.
court judgment: no invitation for the FDP
The administrative court emphasized that the criteria for the invitation of the candidates are based on a "conclusive journalistic concept", which takes into account the principle of equal opportunities. The judges decided that it is important to preserve equal opportunities, but this is not synonymous with formal equal treatment. Rather, the different meanings of the parties in voters also have an impact on the invitations. The controversial decision of the RBB reflects the current reality that the FDP is categorized as "other" in many surveys and thus flies under the radar of political relevance.
In a dramatic change of words, FDP state spokesman Zyon Braun criticized the court's decision as a "scandal". While the RBB wants to invite candidates in its campaign program on September 17 who are currently sitting in the state parliament or fight around five percent hurdle, the FDP sees itself in a disproportionate light. Their allegations of a "defense distortion" are associated with the high politician satisfaction of the broadcaster, which has long turned their backs.
Brandenburg's political future in the SPD light
The elections on September 22nd are just around the corner. The AfD leads in the current surveys, followed by the SPD, which counteracts its voice portion as a possibly strongest force. The CDU is in third place, while the BSW is fighting for fourth place. Against this background, the FDP seems to have been massively falling behind not only in political process management, but also in the perception of voters. The voices that want to be heard the freedoms remain unheard of, while the other parties are in the spotlight.
The developments of the coming days and weeks will show whether the FDP can find out from this deep valley of insignificance or whether it remains on the political route. The judgment of the administrative court and the decision of the RBB could possibly be the last nail in the political coffin for the party - in the style of the repeated "direction".
