Scholz urges peace talks to terminate the Ukraine War

In a recent interview, Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized how important intensive diplomatic efforts to end the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine are more intensive. In the ZDF summer interview, he said: "I think this is now the moment when you also have to discuss how we get peace from this war situation more quickly than that currently gives the impression." Scholz thus emphasizes the urgency of peace talks, which may be decisive for the resolution of a conflict that has now lasted over a year.

When asked about the possible implementation of another peace conference, the SPD politician clearly replied: "There will definitely be another peace conference. And the (Ukrainian) president and I agree that it must also be one with Russia." This is a clear announcement that dialogue with Russia must be a central part of every peace strategy, regardless of the current tensions.

trust in Selenskyj

A sensitive topic that was addressed during the interview concerns the trust between Scholz and the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj, especially reports that a Ukrainian could be involved in the sabotage of the North Stream pipelines. Scholz evaded a direct answer to the question of trust, but emphasized: "I have a good relationship with Wolodymyr Selenskyj." He added that the matter had to be fully clarified and was pleased with the progress of the German security authorities in their investigation.

Together with the current diplomatic efforts, Ukraine has developed its own peace plan, which it would like to have by the international community. At a peace conference in Switzerland, which took place in June, numerous countries already gave their consent to this plan. Russia is not involved in the negotiations, which makes the question of agreements and future prospects more complicated.

The Ukrainian peace plan stipulates that all Russian troops are deducted from all areas of Ukraine, including the Crimea. The demand for reparation payments on the part of Russia is also one of the central aspects of this plan. Another important goal is to hold all those responsible for the war in Russia, both politicians and the military, to an international court.

Scholz ’statements are a clear indication that the federal government wants to stick to the maintenance of the dialogue. At a time when geopolitical tensions increase and the global community is looking for a peaceful solution to this conflict, a new peace conference could be the key to completing war in Ukraine. The willingness to have talks with all parties involved shows a proactive attitude of Germany in this tense situation.
