Trier celebrates the freedom: Exhibition Freedom Tree starts in September!

Stadtbücherei Trier, Deutschland - On September 3, 2024, the “Trier Freiheitbaum” project will be officially started in the Trier city library. This innovative project aims to present creative models on the subject of freedom and democracy. The University of Trier wants to stimulate a lively discussion about the principles of a free-democratic society as part of the science year 2024. Professor Dr. Matthias Busch, the Vice President of the University of Trier, heads the project and sees it a valuable opportunity to bring different perspectives together.

Around 30 groups have worked on the impressive tree models that are about two meters tall and contain ideas and demands on democracy. These models will be visited from September 3 to 28 during the opening hours of the city library after the exhibition will open with a vernissage on September 3 at 6 p.m. The accompanying program will be particularly focused on the participation of children and adults, and the "Freedom Arena" on September 14th will offer a platform to develop concrete projects for the region.

workshop discussions on the citizen: Inner participation

The project is supplemented by several workshop talks that take place in December 2024. These conversations are dedicated to the topic of "municipal citizens: internal participation" and offer the opportunity to develop innovative ideas for a grassroots democratic exchange. Guest speakers such as Elvira Garbes, the mayor of Trier, and Johanna me from the platform for citizens: Interior participation of the city of Trier are expected. The first dialogue will take place on December 3 at 6 p.m. in the city library, followed by another date on December 12th at the University of Trier on the topic of "sustainable urban planning".

the science year 2024 and its meaning

The science year 2024 is under the motto "freedom" and marks several significant anniversaries: the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law and the 35th anniversary of the peaceful revolution. In this context, various facets of freedom are illuminated, including the resilience of democracy in times of the crisis and the freedom required in educational institutions, research areas and art. The initiative invites you to cross -generational discussions and thus promote the exchange between science, society and politics.

Through the support of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the State Center for Political Education, the project is visible as a central impulse within the science year. Further information is available on the website of the project at freiheit.uni-trier.de , while interested participants also directly with Professor Dr. Matthias Busch via email (busch@uni-trier.de) or by phone (+49 651 201-2168).

The “Trier Freiheitbaum” project is therefore not only an artistic exhibition, but also an active contribution to promoting freedom and democracy in the Trier region. In view of the numerous challenges that the democratic values face, this project represents an important step to encourage citizens to help shape their society.
