450 free apprenticeships in the skilled trades: Start your career now!

In the last few weeks before the official start of training, the craft businesses on the Ostalb are eager to fill their training positions. There are currently around 450 unfilled apprenticeships in a variety of professions in the Ulm Chamber of Crafts region. Employers are focusing on training future skilled workers because the need for qualified personnel remains high. Swabian Post reports that this year there are already 98 new training companies in the chamber region that are offering apprenticeships for the first time. Compared to the previous year, when only 88 companies acted as “initial trainers” at the same time, there is significant growth here.

The new training companies are primarily located in the areas of electronics, system mechanics, automotive mechatronics as well as hairdressing and carpentry. Dr. Tobias Mehlich, the general manager of the Ulm Chamber of Crafts, emphasizes the importance of the young generation for the companies. Training in the trade is not only seen as the foundation for a successful career start, but also as a path to further opportunities such as further training and master courses. With the help of a journeyman's certificate, a variety of career paths are open to craftsmen.

The shortage of skilled workers in the craft sector

A look at the current figures shows: the shortage of skilled workers in the skilled trades is a serious problem. A record number of around 236,818 open positions was reached in 2022. According to a study by the KOFAS A large number of vacancies, around 128,891, could not be filled. The construction trades are particularly affected, where almost eight out of ten vacancies could not be filled.

Companies are lacking thousands of skilled workers, especially in construction electrical engineering and plumbing, heating and air conditioning technology. However, this situation could change: there are signs that the number of training places on offer is increasing faster than the number of applicants. Training positions are increasingly being offered in the construction trades with shortages, which gives hope that the situation will ease.

Overall, training in the skilled trades is not only a benefit for young people, but also an important investment in the future of the company - and the entire industry. Anyone who is still looking for an apprenticeship will find numerous opportunities and support at the Ulm Chamber of Crafts.
