Biberach launches large network against child poverty: act now!
In the Biberach district, child poverty is being actively combated with a new prevention network that is intended to improve the municipal infrastructure and increase the opportunities for participation for all children and young people. The project, which has been underway since September 2022, is aimed particularly at children aged zero to six, but is intended to offer support along their life paths up to working age. This is reported by the Swabian.
The Biberach district is one of 26 of 44 districts in Baden-Württemberg that are taking part in this initiative. The support comes, among other things, from the “BC – together for a better future” foundation of the Kreissparkasse Biberach. Despite initial concerns from the CDU and FWV district council factions regarding new positions, District Administrator Mario Glaser was able to emphasize that personnel costs would be covered by funding. Elisabeth Ott, who works as project coordinator, has accepted the challenge of driving this important initiative forward.
Kick-off event
On May 22, 2025, the prevention network was officially presented in the Gaisental district hall. The event began with a welcome from Petra Alger, head of the social affairs department, who emphasized the importance of cooperation. The core elements of the project were presented by Mr. Weiß from Family Research at the Baden-Württemberg State Statistical Office. An initial needs analysis was explained by project coordinator Elisabeth Ott and provided a clear picture of the sensitivity to poverty in the district, which was deepened through various workshops. Impulses also came from Ms. Horst from MitWirkung – Perspectives for Families, a project run by Gesundheit Berlin-Brandenburg e.V., who gave those present practical tips for their everyday work.
The event ended with a motivating speech by Ms. Klüttig, the head of the district youth welfare office, who called on those present to take responsibility together and become active. Biberach.de has provided detailed information on this.
An integrated approach
The initiative is part of a broader plan in Baden-Württemberg that was launched as part of the First Poverty and Wealth Report. The first prevention networks were launched in Singen and Tübingen in 2010, and numerous projects have now been launched and are being tested in various cities. 20% of children and young people in Baden-Württemberg are at risk of poverty, and this network aims to use existing structures and create new ones to close the existing gaps.
A central aspect of the project is comprehensive support for families. The idea of “help from a single source” is intended to ensure that affected parents and children do not have to constantly repeat their stories because all relevant departments are pulling together. At the end of the initial two-year funding period, the district council will decide how to proceed with the next building blocks until 2029. The aim is to efficiently develop and consolidate these programs Strong children BW describes the details.
At a time when more and more children are affected by poverty, Biberach shows with this project that solutions are not only necessary, but also possible. The commitment of everyone involved gives hope that child poverty in the Biberach district will soon be a thing of the past.
