Wurzacher Ried: B-465 closure postponed to Wednesday due to storm protection!

What's new in Bad Wurzach? The construction sites and diversions in the area of federal highway 465 are keeping residents and commuters on tenterhooks. The full closure in Wurzacher Ried was originally scheduled for October 27th, but was postponed to Wednesday, October 29th. The reason for the postponement is the gusty winds, which make it impossible to fell dangerous and damaged trees in the area. According to Screen newspaper, gusts of up to 65 km/h were announced, which significantly impaired safety work.

The B465 will initially remain passable on Tuesday, October 28th. But from Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. the road will be closed in both directions until Friday, October 31st at 2 p.m., including at night. The deforestation work, which falls during this time, should be completed by Friday lunchtime in order to avoid impacts on school bus traffic during the autumn break. The parallel cycle path is also affected by the closure.

Diversions and alternatives

The Bad Waldsee road maintenance department has already set up diversion routes. For traffic in the direction of Unterschwarzach and Biberach, it goes via Mennisweiler – Haisterkirch – Unterschwarzach. Conversely, traffic from Biberach/Unterschwarzach to Bad Wurzach is rerouted via Dietmanns. The measure was coordinated and approved with nature conservation in order to keep the impact on the ecosystem as low as possible.

This work is part of a larger plan, as the Tübingen regional council is planning to build a cycle path along the B465 between Ehingen and Altsteußlingen in 2024. In order to realize this, extensive tree felling work is necessary, which is based on the weather conditions. There will be safety measures for temporary closures, for example using construction site traffic lights, as Schwäbische reports.

Safety on the road

While all of these changes and work are ongoing, safety on the roads remains a major issue. Reports from BASt indicate that accidents in which vehicles collide with trees often have catastrophic consequences. Studies show that the likelihood of serious personal injury is significantly higher on sections with tree plantings than on tree-free routes. A good reason why such work is necessary to make the roads safer for both drivers and pedestrians.

Overall, the renovation work is not only a challenge, but also an opportunity to improve the traffic situation in the region and increase safety for all road users. We will keep an eye on developments around the construction sites and hope that the work progresses quickly.
