Theft in Ehningen: Mountain bike stolen – police are looking for witnesses!

On the quiet night of Thursday, July 18, 2025, a mysterious thief was out and about in Ehningen, and given the matter, it has to be said: the night's peace was not guaranteed for everyone. A mountain bike worth around 600 euros fell victim to the monster, which was stolen from Troppauer Straße. The theft happened anything but unnoticed - between 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening and 7:00 a.m. on Thursday morning, attentive witnesses observed how the perpetrator checked several cars, but without coming across any obvious loot.

The police in Ehningen immediately started an investigation, but so far there have been no reports of further thefts from vehicles or vehicles themselves. Good news for the residents, who are still following the incident with a mixture of concern and curiosity. “It’s not the first time something like this has happened here,” says a nearby neighbor. “But the fact that the thief is acting so boldly is new.” The officers are asking the public for help: Anyone who has observed anything suspicious should call 07034/270450 or email boeblingen.prev@polizei.bwl.de in order to prevent possible further damage.

Crime in Germany: A worrying trend

The cases of theft are not isolated cases, but are part of a nationwide increase in crime. In 2022, a total of around 1.78 million thefts were registered by the police in Germany - a worrying increase that has now reversed after a long decline. Bicycle thefts are particularly common, with 265,562 cases, and thefts in and from motor vehicles, which amount to 235,732 cases. Overall, the theft of other people's property makes up a significant part of crime statistics, as a report on Statista shows.

These developments do not seem to be getting around North Rhine-Westphalia, where more than 23,500 residential burglaries were recorded in 2022, accounting for over 35% of all cases in the German federal states. However, the clearance rate for residential burglaries is at a low level of 16.1%. This is a cause for concern, especially for the residents of Ehningen and the surrounding area, who may no longer feel quite as safe in times of such developments.

The police are once again appealing to citizens to be vigilant and to keep an eye on their surroundings. This means that not only the neighbors are involved, but every individual can contribute to the safety of the community. Keep your valuables safe, lock your vehicles and consider whether it might be wiser to leave your bikes in secure places, even if it sometimes seems as if your place of residence is safe.

The developments in Ehningen show once again how important it is to organize yourself and take preventive measures in order to be protected as best as possible in times of rising crime rates.
