Rufus Beck impresses with satirical reading fun at Böblinger Elbenplatz!

It was that time again at Elbenplatz in Böblingen: the popular StadtLesen literature festival took place last week. And none other than the actor and audio book speaker Rufus Beck kept the listeners entertained. With two satirical texts by Mark Twain, he brought a breath of fresh air into the atmosphere filled with the noise of engines, barking dogs and screaming children. Despite the background noise, Beck managed to create a gripping tension between stage and audience, like that K Rheinische Zeitung reported.

What makes the reading so special? Rufus Beck, known for his lively and captivating reading technique, not only brought the texts to life, but also took the listener into the world of the great American writer with his storytelling. With his satirical observations, Twain repeatedly encourages people to smile at their own culture and the not always so simple German language. He also recently proved this at another event, where Beck read from Twain's famous essay "The Terrible German Language," as the Fulda newspaper reported.

The open-air library in Fulda

As part of the StadtReading project, Borgiasplatz in Fulda enchanted with over 3,000 books and a carefree reading atmosphere that aims to counteract the assumed all-time low in enthusiasm for reading. The event visits 25 cities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and offers a variety of events designed to promote the joy of reading. Among other things, Rufus Beck's opening is planned for July 19, 2024, where he will perform the same essay by Mark Twain. The East Hesse News reports on the ambitious idea of transforming the city into an open-air library on this day.

The events are open to everyone and do not require registration or entry costs. Visitors can immerse themselves in the world of books in a relaxed manner and enjoy the lovingly designed reading corners. The goal is clear: to stimulate reading culture and to inspire children and adults alike for the world of literature.

A diverse program for everyone

  • Freitag, 19. Juli, 22 Uhr: „Gruselnacht“ mit Shaggy Schwarz (Edgar Allan Poe)
  • Samstag, 20. Juli, 15 Uhr: „Kreativ mit alten Büchern“ (Heike Münker, Cordula Widmann)
  • Sonntag, 21. Juli, 15 Uhr: „Familienlesetag“ mit spannenden Geschichten für groß und klein (Heike Münker, Cordula Widmann, Andreas Goldberg)

The StadtReading project not only brings books together, but also people. This is reflected not only in the numerous visitors, but also in the collaboration with 125 partner publishers and authors who act as ambassadors for reading culture. Reading will be very popular again these days - and that's good business for all of our imagination and knowledge.
