Carnival weekend secured in Lörrach: city and guild reach an agreement!

There is currently reason to be happy in Lörrach! The city and the fools' guild have finally reached a common denominator and signed an agreement to hold the street carnival. Mayor Jörg Lutz and Guild Master Michael Lindemer represent the two sides that have struggled over financing in recent months. This agreement ensures that the popular carnival events in the city center can take place in the long term.

The agreement is no small matter: the city has promised an annual subsidy of 20,000 euros for the years 2026, 2027 and 2028. On top of that, the city's previous support services, such as covering half the cost of electricity consumption, will remain in place. For its part, the Fools' Guild undertakes to use the funds received exclusively for events in Lörrach's city center, in particular for the Gugge explosion and the carnival parades. Carnival, an indispensable part of cultural life in this country, will continue to be celebrated widely in the coming years.

Fasnacht: An important cultural heritage

Carnival and its customs are deeply rooted in the culture. In the context of Carnival, it is interesting to know that the day is also celebrated in other parts of the world. For example, Shrovetide Day, known in Pennsylvania Dutch vocabulary as “the eve of fasting,” is celebrated on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. Historically, this day was an opportunity to enjoy rich foods and prepare for fasting.

Traditionally, special donuts, called Fasnachts, are baked on Carnival. This delicacy is particularly prepared by Pennsylvania Dutch families in the United States. The custom of enjoying Fasnacht dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries, when German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania. A Fasnacht is typically made from potato flour, eggs, sugar and butter or lard and is prepared to be crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

A festival full of enjoyment

Especially on Shrove Tuesday, the day on which Carnival is celebrated, the region's many bakeries and markets are teeming with people stocking up on these delicious delicacies. Everyone likes different versions of carnival, sometimes served with butter, sometimes with molasses or syrup. The differences to conventional donuts are notable: Fasnachts contain potatoes and are larger and thicker, while donuts are usually round. The anticipation of this sweet sin shows how closely the food culture is linked to the festive days.

Now that the city of Lörrach and the fools' guild have settled their differences, citizens and visitors can now look forward to the coming carnival days. It is clear that the tradition of carnival not only fulfills an important cultural function, but also brings people together - in festive lightheartedness and anticipation of the coming festivities.

The vast majority of the local council has signaled their approval of the agreed subsidy, which shows how much the city cares about carnival. This agreement paved the way for an unforgettable carnival weekend, which will hopefully attract many new faces to the city center.
