Anniversary Parkrun in Weil am Rhein: Community instead of competition!

On December 6th, 2025 at 9 a.m. the time has come: the 200th Parkrun in Weil am Rhein is coming up, an event highlight in the Dreiländergarten that has been providing lasting impressions since its founding on September 21st, 2021. Mike Lau, who brought the idea of Parkrun from London to Weil am Rhein, wanted to create a place where running was fun and where community spirit was lived. The initiative is free and everyone can take part - both experienced runners and beginners are welcome!

The parkrun regularly attracts between 40 and 50 participants, including sports-loving groups such as the Basel Running Club and students from the Black Forest Academy. Participation is not competitive - rather, the focus is on the social aspect. Regardless of whether someone covers the 5 kilometers in a sensational 17 minutes or in a leisurely 50 minutes, everyone is part of this special community.

Unique experience in the border triangle

The parkrun in Weil am Rhein is something very special as it is the only one in the border triangle. With over 1,000 parkruns in England and 67 in Germany, he is part of a large family fighting loneliness and for health. This year, 3,551 participants took part in various parkruns, with a new attendance record of 110 at the 144th Dietenbach Parkrun in August 2024. Such numbers show the growth of this lovely initiative.

The parkrun is organized by a dedicated core team of 10 to 12 volunteers, who require around six helpers per event. This shows how important volunteer work in sport is and how many people put their heart and soul into making these events possible.

A parkrun for everyone

The charismatic charm of Parkrun can also be felt in the different age groups. Participants range from young to old, with the late 30s age group being very popular. There is no competition; everyone can be proud of their individual performance. This is also reflected in the average values: In 2024, the average running time was 29:21 minutes. And for anyone who wants to enjoy the peace and quiet after the run, taking part is a great way to meet new people and leave the stress of everyday life behind them.
