Aggressive catfish bites five swimmers: police shoot monster fish!
In the late afternoon of June 20, 2025, a frightening incident occurred at Lake Brombachsee in the Bavarian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen, in which at least five bathers were injured by a catfish over two meters long and weighing 90 kilograms. The aggressive fish stayed in the area of a swimming island for a long time and repeatedly attacked the swimmers, which led to significant bites and cuts. The water rescue service, which was alerted at 5 p.m., provided first aid to the injured on site before Red Cross rescue workers arrived to bring the situation under control. The bathers suffered several injuries, which fortunately were not life-threatening at first. According to PZ News, the attacks took place within just two hours.
In order to avert further danger for the swimmers and visitors to a nearby music festival, the authorities decided to close the swimming area. Police were called in because the fish was considered a serious safety risk. With clear and quick action, a police officer finally decided to kill the animal to ensure the safety of the bathers. The catfish was shot with a service pistol and later recovered from the water by two anglers. Only after the fish had been removed from the lake was the bathing area reopened, as RTL.de reports.
An unusual behavior
The fact that catfish can become aggressive is a phenomenon that always causes a stir. In Germany, catfish, also known as catfish, have made numerous headlines in recent years. Many people fear a possible attack, although such incidents are rare. According to Ludwigshafen24, catfish usually do not attack people; however, aggressive behavior can occur, particularly during the spawning season in May and June.
These large fish, which can grow up to three meters long and weigh over 100 kilograms, rarely show their dangerous side. They tend to defend their brood if you are too close to their spawning areas. Bathers should keep in mind that catfish generally cannot cause serious injuries because they have small, blunt teeth. Nevertheless, their attacks can be perceived as unpleasant and painful, as the incidents at Brombachsee clearly showed.
Anglers and fish lovers value catfish as a food fish because of their lack of bones. These animals are not only impressive, they can also live to a very old age, offering exciting challenges for fish lovers. Given yesterday's events, it is to be hoped that future encounters with these impressive creatures will be more peaceful.
