Germany celebrates National Day: Expo 2025 in Osaka is enthusiastic!

On June 20, 2025, Germany celebrated its National Day at the World Exhibition in Osaka. In an impressive speech, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier emphasized the importance of world exhibitions: They not only serve international understanding, but also as a showcase for progress in society. The Expo 2025 slogan, “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” underlines the focus on sustainability and climate protection. Organizers expect a rush of around 28 million visitors by October 13, 2025.

This year's expo is the second in Osaka, the first taking place in 1970. The impressive expo site is located on the artificial island of Yumeshima, also known as the Dream Island, and is surrounded by a ring-shaped wooden structure up to 20 meters high. In the middle of this futuristic environment stands the German pavilion, which focuses on the circular economy and consists of seven circular wooden buildings.

A look into the future

The German pavilion is titled "Wa! Germany" and aims to leave a lasting impression on visitors. Interactive displays invite guests to visualize their ideas of a sustainable city. Patrick Specht, the general commissioner of the German Expo Pavilion, emphasizes that the concept of circularity permeates all facets of German participation, from architecture to the technologies used. This innovative concept is intended to serve as an exemplary model for sustainable construction.

In addition, the German pavilion also conveys emotional and multi-sensory information for the Japanese audience, which means that all of the visitors' senses are addressed. The focus is not only on conserving resources, but also on presenting encouraging examples of a circular world. The architecture comes from the renowned LAVA – Laboratory for Visionary Architecture and includes an intelligent climate concept and an integrated park.

Sustainability rethought

As part of the exhibition, the topic of circular economy is treated holistically. Fraunhofer UMSICHT, for example, presents innovative materials such as circular plastics that promote resource-efficient product design in the plastics industry. Visitors can also interact with mushroom-based materials such as mycelial materials, which are made from organic residues and provide thermal and sound insulation.

The Japanese pavilion also shows exciting approaches to waste recycling. The focus here is on microorganisms that are used in waste management. In addition, algae are presented as a promising food source that is able to produce far more proteins and oils than traditional plants such as soy and sunflower.

Overall, Expo 2025 in Osaka offers a unique platform to present forward-looking ideas and underline the importance of sustainability on a global level. Steinmeier impressively explained that the wise use of resources is crucial for the planet and future generations. Visit the German pavilion and be inspired by ideas and concepts for a more sustainable future.
