Superyacht Bayesian” finally recovered after tragic sinking!
Fortunately, the coast guard off Sicily can announce an important step in the recovery operation of the sunken superyacht “Bayesian”. Ten months after the tragic accident in which seven people lost their lives, the wreck was recovered from a depth of around 50 meters. Loud PZ News The operation is coordinated by the Italian Coast Guard near Porticello, northeast of Palermo. During a storm in August 2024, which brought wind speeds of up to 130 km/h, the yacht, which was considered unsinkable and was 56 meters long and equipped with valuable inventory, capsized.
The wreck will now be drained and stabilized before being towed to the port of Termini Imerese. Interestingly, the ship shows no serious damage to the hull, but the superstructure is partially affected. The 72 meter high mast, which was particularly important for the yacht, is currently still on the seabed and should be recovered by Monday at the latest. The rescue was a technical masterpiece and had to be postponed several times due to various circumstances. Among other things, a Dutch diver died during the preparations, which illustrates the complexity of the work.
Tragic accident and ongoing investigation
The accident, in which owner Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter died, among others, could possibly have been prevented with better weather management. A British investigation report has found that the Bayesian was not designed for extreme weather conditions. The Italian public prosecutor's office is also present at the scene of the accident to secure evidence and clarify the causes of the accident. The New Zealand captain and two crew members are currently under investigation for possible dereliction of duty, an incident that is fueling debate about safety standards in the yachting industry.
To verify further environmental threats, drones with infrared sensors and patrol boats are used. There are said to be around 18,000 liters of fuel in the wreckage, which means additional risks for the environment. The experts of the Federal Office for Maritime Accident Investigation (BSU) are working together with the Italian authorities to determine the exact circumstances of the accident. The aim of these investigations is not only to clarify the facts, but also to prevent future accidents and save lives.
The recovery of the “Bayesian” is more than just a technical undertaking; it reveals shocking details about the risks of sailing and the responsibilities of ship owners. It is to be hoped that the investigations will provide new clarity and prevent future tragedies.
