Night train Basel-Malmö: Ready for travelers from April 2026!
A new night train is in the starting blocks! From April 15, 2026, an exciting connection from Basel to Copenhagen and Malmö will be offered by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and RDC Germany. This initiative expands the night train network from Switzerland and offers an attractive option for travelers who want to travel faster and in a more environmentally friendly way. It is a step in the right direction for all those who choose to travel by train instead of air.
How SRF reported, this connection is financially supported by the federal government. The amount of 47 million francs, as part of the CO₂ law, is intended to cover operating costs and ensure that the new night train connection remains profitable. This is particularly important as night trains are often faced with high costs.
Connection details
The new Euronight runs three times a week and takes travelers from Basel SBB to Malmö at 5:35 p.m., where they arrive at 9:35 a.m. Return journeys start from Malmö on Thursdays, Saturdays and Mondays at 6:57 p.m. and reach Basel SBB at 11:30 a.m. This direct connection is a welcome addition for travelers who want to commute over 1,400 kilometers across Switzerland, Germany and Denmark to Sweden.
The night train offers space for around 350 guests in sleeping, couchette and seated cars, including a barrier-free compartment and a bistro. There will be numerous stops along the way, including Freiburg (Breisgau) Hbf, Karlsruhe Hbf and Hamburg Hbf, although there will be no stop at Copenhagen Central Station. However, travelers can use an easy S-Bahn connection in just 15 minutes from Hoeje Taastrup.
Support and criticism
Financial support for this project is necessary because the operating costs are significant. Every train journey between Basel and Malmö is subsidized by around 30,000 francs. However, there is also criticism of these subsidies. National Councilor Thomas Hurter (SVP/SH) described it as a waste of taxpayers' money, while left-wing parties see the cuts in internationally available financial aid as a threat to the night train network. How BahnBlogStelle In summary, the budgets must be approved by Parliament every December to ensure the seamless implementation of the project.
The SBB intends to improve the existing night train routes and plans to soon purchase new rolling stock for connections to Amsterdam and Hamburg and probably to Vienna. The introduction of the night train to Malmö could be a groundbreaking step for rail transport on an international scale and strengthen the image of the railway as a reliable means of transport.
Ticket sales for the new connection will begin on November 4, 2025. Travelers can look forward to attractive prices that are comparable to existing night train connections from Switzerland. But one thing is certain: traveling by night train will become even more pleasant and easier with the support of the federal government and well-thought-out organization.
