Build your thing: Students are conquering the future of the construction industry!
The “Build your thing” event recently took place in the construction industry training center in Donaueschingen. On two information days, students were able to experience first-hand what the construction industry has to offer. On the first day, 330 students found out about the various training offers, and interest continues: over 160 secondary school students have already registered for a follow-up event in November. A total of around 500 visitors are expected, which is a strong sign of interest in careers in construction. Black Forest messenger reports that the students were able to demonstrate their technical skills in various professional areas.
Michael Kling, the head of the training center, emphasizes the great importance of starting a career, especially in view of the increasing average age of the workforce. Future skilled workers are therefore faced with an exciting task: the need for well-trained specialists will increase in the coming years. However, the requirements for training in construction are clear: a secondary school diploma with a grade average of at least 3, an internship in a construction company and enthusiasm for the craft are required. The ability to work in a team and physical resilience are also among the most important qualities.
Attractive training allowances
The training allowances in the construction industry are not bad: in the first year of training, trainees can expect to receive 1,080 euros, in the second year it is already 1,300 euros and in the third year even 1,550 euros. This is a great incentive for young people to decide to enter this industry. The increasing use of modern machines and technologies in the construction industry also speaks for innovative working conditions.
Despite various challenges in other sectors, such as the automotive industry, the construction industry shows a stable employment and training situation. There will be around 5,300 young talent in the Baden-Württemberg construction industry for the 2024/2025 training year. A pleasing result is that 87% of the companies surveyed plan to maintain or even increase the number of their trainees. This is an important step towards the positive development of the industry.
Challenges and perspectives
But what about the prospects of young people after training? A variety of career paths are open to you here: whether as a foreman, foreman, master craftsman, studying to become a civil engineer or even as a self-employed person - the possibilities are almost unlimited. But the construction industry is currently changing: the shortage of skilled workers is noticeable and represents a challenge for economic development. Construction industry reports that 64% of companies surveyed see this deficiency as a risk.
Another focus is on the integration of skilled workers from abroad, which has become increasingly important in recent years. The proportion of foreigners in the construction industry has increased from 8% in 2009 to 24% in 2024. This shows that the construction industry is becoming increasingly networked on an international level and that the necessary specialists are being brought in from outside to close the gaps.
Overall, the construction industry remains an interesting and promising option for anyone interested in skilled trades. Anyone who enjoys working in a team and is not afraid of physical stress will be welcomed here with open arms. With a good hand, young construction talent can do their own thing and contribute to the growth of this exciting industry.
