Educational trip to Heidelberg: Strengthen dialogue for tolerance and democracy!
Around 45 members of the Röhlinghausen Islamic Community went on a special educational trip to Heidelberg on October 25, 2025. The aim of this trip was to promote democracy and strengthen intercultural competence. The project was organized and supported by committed volunteers from the community who had a good knack for putting together an educational program.
The participants could look forward to a variety of moving places in Heidelberg. Among the highlights was the garden mosque in Schwetzingen Castle Park, which is considered a symbol of tolerance in the Enlightenment. This iconic site was a place of inspiration where understanding of cultural diversity was promoted. The memorial sites for the book burning in 1933 were also on the program. These places of remembrance make it possible to come to terms with the dark past and to address the dangers of the ideology of the “un-German spirit”. At these historical sites, small groups of participants gave short lectures that dealt intensively with the events and emphasized the relevance of respectful discourse in today's world.
Another important point of the trip was the former synagogue square in Heidelberg, which was destroyed by the Nazis on November 10, 1933. This place made it clear how important it is to learn from history and prevent such frightening events from happening again.
A unifying value system
Today, society is more than ever characterized by cultural diversity, which is why the need for equal participation of all people is essential. In this context, the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) updated its recommendations on intercultural education some time ago. The aim is to reduce structural discrimination and promote intercultural openness for everyone. Numerous specialist conferences and workshops have already taken place to further advance these objectives in terms of anchoring intercultural topics in educational institutions. The last conferences have given clear impetus for further developments so that future generations can also benefit from a harmonious and respectful society.
All of these activities and impulses show: Intercultural education is not just a buzzword, but an essential basis for peaceful coexistence in our colorful society. Such educational trips and the associated events take an important step towards tolerance and understanding, which is of utmost importance for the future of our community. Educational projects like these to promote democracy and strengthen intercultural competence not only benefit those involved, but also society as a whole.
