Fire alarm at the Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium: school safely evacuated!
On Tuesday at 10:58 a.m. the fire alarm sounded at the Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium (FEG) in Sandhausen. This led to the immediate evacuation of the school, a move that prioritized the safety of students and faculty. Emergency services from Sandhausen and Nußloch were quickly there to check the situation. The emergency services were well equipped with four fire department rescue vehicles. However, the all-clear was quickly given: There was no danger to the FEG and the alarm turned out to be a false alarm. Possible causes are said to have been smoldering toilet paper, cigarettes or deodorant, reported rnz.de.
Commander Markus Zielbauer described the operation as a “good exercise”, which underlines the efficient coordination between school and operations management. This collaboration was highlighted as “vital” and the operations at the FEG were rated as “super”. Such exercises help to further optimize the security system in schools and consolidate procedures in emergencies.
Safety precautions and practical training
Fire protection is not only a current topic at schools in Sandhausen, but also a central point in Rhineland-Palatinate. The focus here is on various measures to improve the fire protection organization. The inclusion of explanatory films and Power Point presentations for fire protection instruction as well as practical training for fire protection assistants are part of these measures. These modules are intended for annual instruction in schools and support students and teaching staff in the correct use of fire extinguishing equipment. Registration for these courses takes place online via the event catalog of the State Pedagogical Institute, as described in detail on bildung.ukrlp.de.
Such preparatory measures are particularly important, as the incident at the FEG shows. The rapid action of the emergency services and the existing emergency organization make it clear that the community must be well prepared in order to be able to react correctly in an emergency.
School life at the Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium
Despite the incident, school activities remain varied and exciting. The 2025 summer concert took place on June 19, 2025, opened by the C Orchestra under the direction of Anke Dieterle and Christoph Posselt. Other events, such as a concert focused on the life of Harriet Tubman, also demonstrate an active school life. The math camp was held from May 12th to 14th, 2025 with around 20 interested students and teachers. These events demonstrate the school's commitment to not only impart knowledge to students, but also to provide interesting and educational experiences, complementing safety aspects wherever necessary, as can be found on fegglocke.wordpress.com.
FEG students have many more events to look forward to while keeping safety top of mind. The Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium remains not only a place for learning, but also a livable space in which safety is a top priority.
