Small hands, big future: daycare centers explore exciting crafts!
In the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, the daycare centers are in the starting blocks for an exciting competition: “Small hands, big future”. This competition, organized by the Mannheim Rhein-Neckar-Odenwald Chamber of Crafts, is intended to introduce children aged 3 to 6 to the fascinating world of crafts. The aim is for the little ones to discover the diversity of crafts and become active themselves while getting to know everyday things.
Participating daycare centers have the opportunity to visit local craft businesses. During these visits, the children are allowed to lend a hand themselves, be it kneading dough, hammering or cutting. These hands-on experiences are designed to stimulate children's curiosity and encourage them to understand how everyday objects are created. Over 130 trades are involved in the competition, including bakers, hairdressers, carpenters and many more. “The competition not only promotes practical learning, but also shows children the creative possibilities that crafts offer,” the organizers said on the competition website.
Participate and win
There are no limits to creativity! After the visit, the children have to record their experiences on a giant poster. This poster must be submitted by March 30, 2026. Anyone who manages to create an impressive work of art from their experiences has the chance to win prize money of 500 euros for the best daycare center. This is not only a great opportunity for the children to express their creativity, but also for the craft businesses, who can increase their visibility in the neighborhood by working with the daycare centers.
Participation is uncomplicated: a free competition package can be requested via the Chamber of Crafts website, and the daycare centers receive all the information they need to participate. The contact persons at the Mannheim Chamber of Crafts can be reached via the email address bildungsberatung@hwk-mannheim.de. The website kita-vergleich.de also provides information about the details of the competition and how to register.
A step towards promoting young talent
The family bond between craft businesses and daycare centers is essential for promoting young talent. In addition to the opportunity to develop creative and practical skills, the competition also enables solid cooperation between the daycare centers and the companies. Both sides benefit from this: the daycare centers can provide exciting activities for their children and the craft businesses can position themselves as important partners in the community.
The aim of this approach is not only to raise awareness of skilled trades, but also to lay the foundation for the future development of skilled workers. “We are convinced that the children will get a lasting impression of the importance of craftsmanship through direct experience,” said the organizers.
For anyone interested in taking part, there are a variety of ways to get information quickly and easily. Exciting experiences and a unique opportunity await to get the “new little hands” excited about the craft.
