Cows died at stable fire - 650,000 euros in property damage in Ellwangen!

In a devastating stable fire in Ellwangen in the Ostalb district, several cows have lost their lives. The fire that was discovered on Sunday evening led to an immense property damage of around 650,000 euros. The owners of the courtyard noticed the fire in good time and were able to bring a large part of their dairy cows and cattle to safety before the fire brigade arrived. Unfortunately, the help came too late for some of the animals, such as mainpost.de reported.

The fire brigade was on site with 13 vehicles and around 80 emergency services and was able to prevent the flames from spreading to an adjacent house. Fortunately, there were no personal injury, but the investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing. The post-extinguishing work died until the early hours of the following Monday morning, such as swr.de reported.

a well -known problem: stable fires in Germany

stable fires are unfortunately not uncommon in Germany. Every year, such incidents are harmed over a hundred thousand animals. Modern animal husbandry often focuses on cost -effective mass husbandry, whereby fire protection is usually neglected. The causes of these fires are diverse and range from technical defects to short circuits to summer heat or even arson. Many stable fires could be prevented by regular maintenance and safe storage of inflammable materials, according to the Albert Schweitzer Foundation.

The animal welfare reservation regulations stipulate that the animals have to be excluded. In reality, however, many stable constructions in fires quickly fail and mean that animals cannot be saved in time. Often even rescued animals have to be euthanased due to burns or flue gas poisoning.

fire protection: an urgent topic

The missing official statistics on stable fires make the identification and elimination of causes difficult. According to animal rights activists, at least 153,000 animals died in stable fires in 2021. Political measures to improve fire protection in stalls are progressing only slowly, although the topic is anchored in the coalition agreement. The Federal Council has already called for a size restriction of animal husbandry plants to improve the fire security situation.

The sad incident in Ellwangen impressively shows how important effective fire protection measures are in modern animal husbandry. There is often a look at cost-benefit factors, while the well-being of the animals moves into the background. It is high time that reforms in fire protection and animal husbandry are brought about to prevent such tragedies in the future.
