Fire Department in Idaho Victims of Fatal Ambush – Two Dead!
In a shocking incident in Idaho, USA, a man lured firefighters into a deadly ambush with a deliberately set fire. There was an attack on Sunday evening in which two firefighters lost their lives and another was seriously injured. Sheriff Robert Norris recounted the dramatic events that turned a firefighting mission near Coeur d'Alene into a nightmare, much to the chagrin of everyone involved. The firefighters came under fire when they arrived - the suspected perpetrator acted alone and was later found dead in the mountainous region, with a high-powered rifle next to him.
The circumstances of this incident shine a bright light on the ongoing problem of gun violence in the United States. Given that access to firearms is relatively easy in this country, it is hardly surprising that such tragic incidents occur again and again. According to the Gun Violence Archive in Washington, which documents gun victims, there have already been over 14,000 gun deaths in the United States as of May 2, 2023, of which more than 8,000 were suicides. The numbers are alarming: 6,065 people died from murder, manslaughter or accidental shooting. In comparison, Germany recorded 2,236 cases of murder and manslaughter in the same year.
Alarming statistics on gun violence
The enormous numbers cannot be denied. In the USA there are more than 120 private firearms per 100 inhabitants, while in Germany there are fewer than 20. In many states there are few requirements regulating the sale or possession of firearms. Assault rifles are often freely available and the legal discussions surrounding the Second Amendment of the US Constitution - the right to bear arms - ensure that initiatives to restrict gun ownership usually fail. The influence of the gun lobby, particularly the National Rifle Association (NRA), has persisted for decades and impacts legislation.
- Todesfälle durch Schusswaffen in den USA (Stand Mai 2023):
- 14.181 Tote insgesamt
- 8.000 Selbstmorde
- 6.065 durch Mord, Totschlag oder versehentliche Schüsse
Self-protection as a motive for gun ownership seems to be becoming increasingly important in society. The subjective feeling of insecurity has increased dramatically in recent years. While it was 26% in 1998, 79% of gun owners currently said that protection was the main reason for owning a gun. This feeling is particularly strong among historically marginalized groups, such as black and Asian women. In fact, 99% of people say protection is their primary reason.
Public Opinion and Gun Laws
Interestingly, the majority of the US population, regardless of political affiliation or personal experience, has wanted stricter gun laws for nine years. A 2015 survey showed that over 50% of the population wants stricter regulations. However, enforcing these changes is difficult because laws in most states are often very lax, increasing the likelihood that gun owners will carry their guns with them on a daily basis.
The tragedy in Idaho is another example of the dangers posed by inadequately regulated gun ownership. It remains to be hoped that social pressure and public discussions will lead to a revision of gun laws in order to avoid such incidents in the future and to strengthen citizens' sense of security. While the aftermath of this incident will be painful for the communities affected, it should also serve as a wake-up call for us to seriously advance the debate about gun laws and safety in the United States.
The fire has not yet been extinguished at the time of this report, but according to authorities there is no longer any immediate danger to those in the area. But the consequences of this painful event will last for a long time.
