Cuxhaven will soon be surfing at lightning speed: fiber optic expansion started!
On June 16, 2025, the starting signal was given for the long-awaited fiber optic expansion in Cuxhaven. With the aim of significantly improving the digital infrastructure of the coastal city, over 5,000 households and business locations are to be connected to the fiber optic network. This is made possible by the company Glasfaser Nordwest, which began construction work in cooperation with Nord Connect in May 2025. During a visit to the construction site, Cuxhaven's mayor Uwe Santjer and other local representatives checked the progress of the work and expressed optimism about the coming developments.[Commune21]
The need for fast and reliable internet connections is constantly growing, and the fiber optic expansion is seen as a crucial step for Cuxhaven's digital future. Users can benefit from speeds of up to 1,000 megabits per second (Mbps), which is particularly advantageous for streaming, surfing and working from home. The open access principle of Glasfaser Nordwest enables households and companies to choose from offers from a total of six providers: Telekom, EWE, 1&1, SIT Telekom, MK Netzdienste and Plusnet.[Fiber Northwest]
Investing in the digital future
Glasfaser Nordwest was founded in 2020 as a joint venture by Telekom Deutschland GmbH and EWE AG with the aim of driving forward the FTTH (Fibre to the Home) expansion for up to 1.5 million households and company locations. Investments of up to two billion euros are planned to improve competitive conditions in the telecommunications market. This means that the network is made available to all providers without discrimination.[Fiber Northwest]
In Germany, the fiber optic connection is a key technology that enables the highest theoretical data transfer rates. Nevertheless, the spread of fiber optic connections has only increased slowly, and Germany is in a rather poor position compared to other countries. With a fiber optic share of around 11 percent, the country ranks 36th in the OECD ranking. While fiber optic expansion is flourishing in countries like South Korea and Iceland, Germany is lagging behind. However, the federal government's gigabit strategy, which aims to connect half of all households to the fiber optic network by the end of 2025, could finally mark a turning point here.[Statista]
A look into the future
The efforts to expand fiber optics in Cuxhaven clearly show that there is a clear trend towards better internet connections. People want this fast access to meet the demands of the digital world. The progress that can already be seen in Cuxhaven could be decisive in keeping the region attractive in the future. The further development of broadband technology will continue to be the focus in order to exploit the strengths of fiber optics and position Cuxhaven as a modern location.[Commune21]
