Cell phone tower in Waldmössingen: Dispute over location is gaining momentum!
In Waldmössingen, the planned location of a new Telekom cell phone mast is causing heated discussions. The local administration and residents in particular have entered the ring in a media-effective manner, although opinions on the project vary greatly. Black Forest messenger reports concerns raised by a former local government employee, Prowasnik. This asks whether the location was not discussed publicly in the local council. Your call for renewed consultation regarding the mast is supported by Councilor Sabine Munz, who has spoken out against the current location.
The discussion doesn't get any easier because there are both supporters and opponents of this cell tower. The criticism relates, among other things, to the fact that the citizens' initiative only found out about the plans nine months after the lease agreement was concluded. Ullrich, the local mayor, defends himself by explaining that he was not the negotiator with Telekom and has no decision-making power over the location. He also points out that there was no non-public meeting.
Tensions in the local council
As part of a residents' question time, Ullrich answered questions from mast opponents and assured that the city - not him - had concluded the contract with Telekom. This request to discuss the topic of cell phone towers came from the committee itself. The topic is expected to be postponed to the next meeting in October. A report from the citizens' initiative, expected in October, will also reach the local council, but it was not commissioned by the city or Telekom.
In recent years, improving mobile communications coverage in Germany has become increasingly important. The federal government's offer to ensure nationwide mobile communications aims to better connect rural areas so that emergency calls can be sent even to the most remote corners of the republic. The federal government has been funding projects to improve mobile network quality since 2021.
Health and conservation: residents' concerns
Another point of discussion is the health concerns of residents, who consider the planned location in the immediate vicinity of residential buildings to be critical. However, Ullrich refers to compliance with the legal limit values and the Immission Control Act. The report that the citizens' initiative wants to present to the local council could potentially provide new insights. However, nature conservation approval for the construction of the mast is still pending, which will probably postpone the start of work until the first quarter of 2026.
Telekom rejected the alternative locations suggested by the citizens' initiative as not being technically feasible. Ullrich makes it clear that Telekom is the only provider required to significantly improve the mobile communications infrastructure in Waldmössingen. The situation in which citizens are discussing a crucial factor for the future of their mobility shows once again how important transparent communication and involvement of residents in such planning are.
