hackers increasingly aim at cryptocurrency investors, with hundreds of million dollars to be lost to attackers this year
The Coinbase cryptocurrency exchange has confirmed that around 6,000 customers were affected by an exploit of a weak point in the multi-factor authentication process (MFA) of the platform. The exploit took place between March and May this year.
It is unclear how the attacker has gained access to the information, but Coinbase suspects that this was done via phishing campaigns that aimed at the accounts of its customers to steal their access data. The attacker then used an error in the MFA system from Coinbase to get access to the user accounts and remove funds from the cryptocurrency exchange.
Coinbase has told its customers that is not able to determine how the hacker have achieved, as a rule this happens through campaigns, which are intended to tempt the victims to disclose access data to the attackers unknowingly. " We have not found any evidence that these third parties received this information from Coinbase themselves ," added the cryptocurrency exchange.
Coinbase said that it intends to reimburse the customer the exact amount they lost through the hack. The crypto exchange will also offer the affected customers free telephone support and credit surveillance. In addition, Coinbase said that the law enforcement authorities would work to initiate internal studies in order to find the perpetrators responsible for the attack.
Coinbase is one of the world's leading trading platforms for digital assets with more than 65 million customers. It became a listed company at the beginning of the year and had a market capitalization of over $ 60 billion. In the first two quarters of the year, Coinbase recorded massive growth, which coincided with a market bull run, in which Bitcoin achieved a new all -time high of over 64,000 per coin.
