Illegal car racing in Stuttgart: BMW vs. Mercedes in the city center!

In the early morning hours of June 21, 2025, at two o'clock to be precise, a spectacular illegal car race took place in the middle of downtown Stuttgart. Two young men, 30 years old and 24 years old, were allegedly driving a BMW and a Mercedes when their risky drive was observed by a police patrol in the Planie Tunnel. The police immediately gave chase and were able to stop and check the two drivers. Both men's driving licenses were confiscated and an investigation was initiated on suspicion of illegal motor vehicle racing. The police are now looking for witnesses and possible victims who have information about the incident. Those affected can contact the traffic police on 0711/89904100.

But Stuttgart is not the only place where such races take place. The phenomenon of illegal street racing is increasing alarmingly throughout Baden-Württemberg. According to a report by BW24, the A81 motorway section between Engen and Geisingen is particularly badly affected and tops the list of illegal street races in Germany. In the first half of 2023, the police registered a total of 207 such races, an increase of 19 percent compared to the same period last year. It is often high-priced sports and luxury vehicles with Swiss license plates that are spotted on German roads. Apparently the drivers are switching to German roads due to stricter penalties in the neighboring country.

The legal consequences

Participation in such races can have devastating legal consequences. Since 2017, illegal street racing has been considered a criminal offense and penalties can be up to two years in prison. There was a brief relaxation in the statistics in 2022, but in 2023 the trend is clearly increasing again. Police have stepped up efforts to crack down on illegal racing through increased checks, video surveillance and harsh penalties against speeders. In the worst case, luxury vehicles could even be confiscated.

As spiegel.de reports, this problem is not just a local phenomenon, but affects numerous cities in Germany. The increase in illegal car racing poses a serious threat to road safety and the police are working to counteract it. In many cases it is young men who compete with each other and put the safety of all road users at risk.

The case in Stuttgart shows how intense the situation is and that despite the measures taken, applicable laws are continually being violated. The challenge for the police will remain to find a balance between controlling measures and ensuring safety on the streets.
