Million dollar thief caught in Stuttgart: escape ends at the border!

The hunt for an escape criminal has made new waves in recent days, as Robert S. (31) was arrested in North Macedonia. He is suspected of being the mastermind of a spectacular theft in Stuttgart. In October 2022, an incredible amount of 1.25 million euros was stolen from the valuables transport company Prosegur, which his accomplice, Mirnesa S. (42), took and immediately fled. The situation quickly escalated as both those arrested immediately disappeared abroad, but the stolen goods soon became a hot topic in the region. Bild.de reports that the police became aware one day after the theft.

Mirnesa S. turned herself in to the authorities in January 2023 because she felt threatened by Robert S. This return to the police was a courageous step, but it came with the price of three years in prison, which she received in July 2023 at the Stuttgart Regional Court for her role in the theft. Her confessions and statements about accomplices influenced the court to keep her sentence below the maximum of ten years. Mirnesa stated that she only received 20,000 euros of the stolen money and reported a relationship with Robert S. that started with lots of gifts and compliments, but quickly turned negative. Focus.de highlights that she was suspected of being exploited and feels great remorse for her actions.

The escape and arrest

Robert S., on the other hand, is still on the run and was only caught yesterday trying to cross the border from Greece to North Macedonia. A check revealed a European arrest warrant against him, which is connected to the theft worth millions in Germany. The whereabouts of the remaining 1.2 million euros remains a mystery. Mirnesa plans to testify against Robert - a decision that carries both courage and danger - and confirms that their relationship was marred by insecurities, as Robert increasingly ignored her after indulging in theft.

Since returning from probation, Mirnesa S. has been living with a friend in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt and is having difficulty finding a job. Her future plans seem to be shaped by the hope for normality now that she has put the hardships behind her.

Context and social perception

These events have also sparked a wide-ranging debate about crime and its perception in society. A current study by the Center for Criminological Research Saxony e. V. emphasizes that the perceived frequency of crime is often influenced by personal experiences and fears. The study shows that many people, particularly on the right of center, have a high perception of crime and a general distrust of the justice system. ZKFS explains that these perceptions often do not match actual crime statistics, fueling the public's need for stricter punishments.

The reports by Mirnesa and Robert S. not only shed light on the specific events, but also on the complex web of emotions, social pressure and the perception of security in our cities.
