New Lustnau Bridge opens: Barrier-free access to the regional stop!
On July 19, 2025, a new foot and cycle bridge will open its doors in the Lustnau district of Tübingen. Mayor Boris Palmer and District President Klaus Tappeser are present to accompany the opening with a festive ceremony. “After a year of intensive construction work, the time has finally come,” says Palmer, pleased about the barrier-free connection between Gartenstrasse and Bismarckstrasse. RTF1.
The new bridge, a wooden structure 5.5 meters wide and 70 meters long, replaces the old Bankmannsteg and connects Lustnau directly with the Alte Weberei and the future stop of the “Neckaraue” regional light rail. “Pedestrians and cyclists are warmly welcomed here,” emphasizes Tappeser, who emphasizes the importance of this infrastructure for local residents.
Sustainable construction
The planning and execution of the bridge are not only practical, but also sustainable. It will be built using environmentally friendly timber construction, with the total project costs being around 4.7 million euros. This sum is supported by funding from the State Municipal Transport Financing Act. KFV Tübingen.
The dismantling of the old Bankmannsteg began on May 27, 2024 and detours had to be taken during the construction work. In order to overcome the barrier between Lustnau and the surrounding areas, but also to close the connection, new wheel axles and bridges were created. These improvements are part of a larger plan that will distribute a total of four wheel axles in a north-south direction across the city. KFV Tübingen.
Connection and celebration
Not only prominent guests were invited to the ceremonial opening. With coffee and cake, those present were also able to enjoy the performance of the Lustnau Trombone Choir. “It’s a beautiful day for everyone here in Lustnau,” said Palmer, visibly enthusiastic. The bridge is not only a practical route, but also a place for meetings and togetherness.
The bridge could also be well positioned for future awards. The German Bridge Construction Prize values sustainable construction methods and innovative engineering solutions, with numerous construction projects having already been nominated for their resource-saving approaches, including the new long-distance cycle path network connection in Tübingen. There will always be such initiatives to further develop and improve the local infrastructure. NBAU.
The Lustnauer Bridge is therefore not only a technical innovation, but also a sign of progress in sustainable urban development. Residents can look forward to an improved quality of life and new opportunities that come with this infrastructure.
