A home for Nelly and Moses: two cats are urgently looking for help!
In a small animal shelter in Tuttlingen, a very special pair of cats are waiting for their second chance: Nelly and Moses are inseparable friends who have been living in the animal shelter for two years. Animal shelter manager Birgit Ströhle describes her situation as challenging. While the lively tomcat Moses comes from a household where the owners kept many animals without proper care through animal hoarding, the shy Nelly does not immediately catch the eye. She needs a special soul to feel comfortable, and that's exactly why a home together is urgently desired for the two of them.
Aside from Nelly and Moses, there are currently around 60 to 70 other cats living in the animal shelter. In these summer months, however, Ströhle fears that many animals will be given away, which could further put a strain on the home's already strained financial situation. "The average time for adopting cats is ten weeks. Kittens often have an easier time," reports Ströhle. It also happens again and again that animals are brought back - like Henry the cat, who was no longer able to stay in his new home after becoming ill.
Placement and adoption process
Adopting a cat from an animal shelter not only offers the animal a second chance, but also creates space for other cats in need. According to Tierschutzliga, the costs for cat placement are between 50 and 100 euros, depending on the age and characteristics of the cat. There are different requirements for each adoption: While outdoor cats need more exercise, a connected balcony is often crucial for indoor cats.
But how does the process work? Anyone interested must seek personal advice in advance to ensure that the new cat really fits into their own home. A preliminary inspection is often carried out before the protection contract is concluded. After the adoption, the animal welfare organizations remain as contacts for questions and are happy to provide feedback on the animals adopted.
The problem of animal hoarding
A key problem is the phenomenon of animal hoarding. In 2021, 68 cases and over 4,200 affected animals were reported - a record, as Deine Tierwelt Magazin emphasizes. More and more cases are being documented, but the number of unreported cases is believed to be significantly higher. Cats are the most frequently affected animals. Real animal suffering doesn't just happen behind closed doors. Animal shelters help here by caring for the rescued animals and preparing them for a new home.
Financial emergencies, crises such as the corona pandemic or the war in Ukraine can further exacerbate the problem of hoarding. Among other things, the German Animal Welfare Association is calling for better financial support from municipalities and making suggestions to improve the situation, such as introducing a pet protection ordinance.
It's high time for loving adopters to provide Nelly and Moses with a home where they can thrive together. The animal shelter hopes to adopt out some animals before the holidays. The best way to find out whether you have a heart for the two animals is to visit the animal shelter.
