Doner kebab price shock in Karlsruhe: 9.75 euros for the popular snack!
Kebab prices in Germany have skyrocketed in recent months, and customers are clearly losing out. In Karlsruhe, where a kebab now costs 9.75 euros, the price is currently the second highest in Germany. Only in Flensburg is the kebab even more expensive at 9.77 euros, as Merkur reports.
Lieferando's latest kebab price index shows that there are extreme price differences in Germany. Halle (Saale) has the cheapest kebab at 5.79 euros, which is almost 70 percent less compared to Karlsruhe. Other cities also present clear differences: the average price in Stuttgart is 8.61 euros, making it the fifth most expensive city. The price increases are particularly noticeable in Frankfurt am Main, where the price has increased from 7.21 euros to 8.99 euros.
Price development and influences
The rising prices are not just a phenomenon in Karlsruhe and Flensburg, but affect the entire country. Since July 2023, the price of the kebab in Stuttgart has increased by 3.5 percent. The evaluations show that the prices for kebabs increased by a total of 3.6 percent by March 2025, while the value of money fell by over five percent during this period, according to reports from WDR.
A particularly worrying trend can be seen in ingredient prices: tomatoes and lettuces have risen sharply in the last two years, while the price of onions, garlic and cabbage has fallen. This makes it difficult for many kebab shops to keep prices stable. You are increasingly hearing voices from the catering industry that kebabs now have to cost at least nine euros to break even, as Tagesschau reports.
Market developments and future outlook
The market conditions are currently unpleasant: the increase in producer prices for kebab producers will be up to 20 percent in 2025. One example is the owner of the “Oğuz Döner” in Neuss, who reports that the price per kilo for veal has risen from 8.50 euros to 13 euros. Supermarket prices for meat have also risen by around eight percent since summer 2023.
On the other hand, there is concern that kebab prices could soon reach the ten euro mark. This could mean that kebabs under five euros will soon be a relic of the past. And as consumers face steep food price increases, such as a 65 percent increase in tomatoes and a 20 percent increase in vegetables, the question arises: How will we be able to enjoy our favorite fast food in the future?
The many price fluctuations on the one hand and the challenges caused by inflation and increased operating costs on the other make it clear that things are really hot in the kebab industry at the moment!
