Friedberg celebrates the Renaissance: A festival of history and craftsmanship!

The anticipation for the historic “Friedberger Zeit” festival is growing and the first preparations are already underway. From July 4th to 13th, 2025, the historic old town of Friedberg will be transformed into a stage of the 17th and 18th centuries. Here the city's history comes to life when thousands of citizens compete in magnificent historical costumes. Many of these costumes are handmade according to original patterns and promise an authentic experience. For anyone who wants to go back in time, this is an absolute must, like that Danube Courier reported.

The city festival, which is celebrated every three years, offers an extensive supporting program. From handmade music to theater performances to a traditional school play, there are no limits to the variety. Experience highlights such as a clock spectacle and demonstrations of traditional crafts also attract visitors. Craftsmen such as blacksmiths, potters, coin minters and stonemasons demonstrate their skills and invite you to have a massage at the historic spa.

Tradition and craftsmanship

The craftsmanship in Friedberg is particularly proud. Robert Höck, master blacksmith and head master of the Augsburg Metal Guild, will be part of the city festival together with his family and friends from the Federal Mogul company. “Craftsmen who take part in the city festival do so on a voluntary basis and invest a lot of time and effort,” says Höck. If you even nod “I have the honor,” you can continue the tradition that was common practice in Friedberg until the 1950s. Honor and respect were of the utmost importance to citizens in the 18th century, so dishonest people like this were excluded from the guild Friedberg time holds on.

The craftsmen are active in the shadow of the guild traditions, which were carefully regulated as early as the 18th century. At that time, guilds determined the number of masters, journeymen and apprentices and were responsible for the quality of the products. Today, it turns out, these traditions are kept alive through modern influence and volunteer efforts. Many craftsmen still present their demands and artistic skills, such as the pewter casters or the carpenters, who formed their own guild in the 18th century.

Culinary delicacies

But it's not just the craftsmanship that is neglected! Visitors can look forward to 17th and 18th century-style dishes served on baroque tableware. There is culture, fascination and feasting – everything your heart desires. Adults pay 10 euros per day to enter, or 20 euros for a multi-day ticket, which is quite reasonable for such an experience.

Overall, the “Friedberger Zeit” will be a real treat for all the senses. There will also be new stands from small and large craftsmen who represent their traditions with a lot of commitment. The craftsmen are reminiscent of guild regulations that distorted competition, which were viewed critically by state authorities in the 18th century and whose reforms still play a role in crafts today, such as Habsburgs communicates.

The dazzling spectacle celebrates the honor of craftsmanship - an honor that was not only very important in the 18th century, but is still important for every craftsman today. Let’s go, Friedberg – the journey through time to the Renaissance can begin!
