Colorful northern lights illuminate the night sky over Altötting!
On Tuesday night, the sky over the Altötting district and all of Bavaria shone in a spectacular play of colors. The cause of this was the northern lights, which according to the German Weather Service (DWD) were observed unusually far south. Clear night sky conditions created the ideal conditions for this natural spectacle.
Northern lights are caused by plasma, which consists of electrically charged particles and is directed to Earth by solar flares. The current eruption was so intense that the impressive light phenomena reached as far as the Alpine region. Tine Limmer captured the red-green sky over Feichten with her camera and shared the breathtaking image.
Worrying developments for electronics engineers
The strong solar activity not only leads to these fascinating celestial spectacles, but can also have serious effects on technical devices. Electronics in particular are vulnerable to the increased waves of energy that solar storms bring. High-energy particles can disrupt the functionality of devices and even affect the power supply.
Fascination and risk of solar activity
A striking example from the past is the solar storm of 2003, which caused a power outage in Malmö and disrupted air traffic in the USA. Given the growing sensitivity of electronic devices, it is a challenge for experts to accurately predict the possible consequences of a very violent solar storm. However, thanks to increased technology, the susceptibility to such disruptions tends to increase.
So anyone who ventures outside in the next few days to observe the fascinating northern lights should also keep their eyes open for possible technical malfunctions. It remains to be seen how solar activity will develop and what colors the sky will offer us in the future.
