During the ceremony, Mayor Erwin Geitner (CSU) not only presented the official honorary sponsorship certificate from Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, but also a cash gift of 500 euros. “The honorary sponsorship is a sign of appreciation and is intended to underline the achievements of mothers like Ms. Hansen-Mayer, who are considered role models for many,” explained Geitner during his speech.
Honorary sponsorship and its meaning
Like the website of Federal Presidential Office explained, the Federal President can take on honorary sponsorship of the seventh child of a family in order to strengthen the social prestige of families with large children. It is important that the family has at least seven living children, including the godchild. The honorary sponsorship is purely symbolic and makes it possible to recognize the achievements of families like those of Hansen-Mayer.
The application for honorary sponsorship was submitted to the Federal Office of Administration in Cologne and then successfully approved. This shows how well the cooperation between the authorities and the families works. “We work closely with cities and municipalities to prepare all the necessary congratulations and sponsorship letters in a timely manner,” said a spokeswoman for the Federal Administrative Office.
The advantages of honorary sponsorship
The honorary sponsorship, which has now existed since 1949, not only offers symbolic value, but also some financial advantages for the families. By presenting the cash gift of 500 euros, a small contribution is made to supporting families with several children. In addition, applications can also be submitted for children born later if the application for the seventh child was not initially submitted.
