Bamberg celebrates its premiere: Queer city tour on July 13th!
On July 13, 2025, something very special starts in Bamberg: the first queer-historical city tour, part of the colorful program for “Christopher Street Day Bamberg”. The free tour begins at 2 p.m. at the Neptune Fountain at the Green Market (“Gabelmoo”) and lasts around 90 minutes. Organized by History For All e.V., this tour offers a unique insight into queer life in Bamberg.
The focus is on the many facets of queer historical development, from the queer artists of the Weimar Republic to the AIDS crisis and police violence in the past. The research for this tour was carried out by historians and volunteers in cooperation with “CSD Bamberg e.V.” carried out. “We want to represent the diversity of queer life and show how important solidarity and self-assertion are,” emphasizes the organizer.
A place for queer people
The aim of the city tour and the entire CSD program is to make Bamberg a safe haven for queer people. This is not just about celebrations, but also about the painful background of eliminating prejudice, violence and exclusion. The organization of queer people advocates for a free and carefree life and invites everyone to show solidarity.
However, that is not the only thing Bamberg has to offer. After the premiere, the city tour continues every third Friday of the month at 5 p.m. Further dates are planned for July 18, August 15, September 19 and October 17, 2025. In order to really reach a lot of people, the tickets are quite affordable at €12 regular and €10 reduced. Bookings and group requests can be made via the Story For All website.
The roots of the CSD
For those who don't know where the name "Christopher Street Day" comes from, the movement was started after the Stonewall riots in 1969, when a violent uprising against police brutality and discrimination took place in New York. This is considered the beginning of one of the largest emancipation movements for queer rights in the world. In Germany, too, the CSD had its first beginnings in the late 1970s; The first parade took place in Berlin in 1979 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion, reports the Federal Agency for Civic Education.
Since then, CSD events have not only become established in many German cities, but have also developed into a platform on which the concerns of the LGBTQ+ community are loudly represented. Even if the original character of the CSD sometimes threatens to disappear in commercialization, the politically committed foundation of this movement remains of central importance.
Overall, the upcoming city tour in Bamberg shows how complex the queer historical landscape is and how important it is to keep this history alive. There is something in the air – the anticipation of a colorful, diverse event! Come along and experience the story for yourself.
