Dangerous forest fire risk: aerial surveillance over Bamberg started!

There is an acute risk of forest fires in the Bamberg region due to the ongoing drought. Since June 28, 2025, the government of Upper Franconia has ordered aerial observation, which will be extended until July 3, 2025. This measure is intended to keep an eye on particularly endangered forest areas. How webecho-bamberg.de reported, the air helper squadrons from Bayreuth and Bamberg will carry out the surveillance.

The focus of the aerial observation covers various forest areas, including the pine and spruce forests of the Jura plateau and the main smoor forest area. The forests between Bamberg and Forchheim as well as the Langheimer Forest near Lichtenfels are also in focus. In addition, the forests in the Coburg region are affected by the current danger.

Important rules of conduct

The precautionary measures apply not only in the forest, but also when grilling and having campfires nearby. It is advisable to alert the fire department immediately on 112 if fires or smoke are noticed. A precise description of the location, ideally with GPS coordinates, makes the work of the emergency services easier.

Background on the danger of forest fires

Like that berliner-feuerwehr.de explains, the risk of forest fires increases in times of hot and dry weather. Even sporadic rain showers cannot completely reduce the risks. Forest fires are often caused by negligence, such as throwing cigarette butts out of the car. Dry leaves and branches also quickly catch fire, which can lead to devastating fires.

The situation is different in Germany. Between 1991 and 2017, the area of forest fires fell, while the weather-related danger remained the same or increased in some regions, such as this Federal Environment Agency determines. However, the extreme weather conditions in 2018 and 2019 led to an increase in wildfires, particularly in the northeastern states.

In Brandenburg, for example, forest fires were a serious threat. In 2018, there were 512 fires here, which claimed an area of 1,674 hectares. The most serious fire this year occurred near Jüterbog and destroyed 573.72 hectares of forest. These experiences highlight the need to further improve fire prevention and control and respond to ongoing challenges.

With this in mind, it is important to remain vigilant and adhere to safety instructions. This is the only way we can help the endangered forest areas and the animals and plants that live there. Every individual can make a contribution!
