Digital education in the highlands: Children conquer the computer world!
In the border area of Phong Tho, Lai Chau, the Dao San Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities underwent a remarkable change. The school, which primarily caters to children from ethnic minorities such as Dao, Mong and Thai, has demonstrated in recent years how education can change lives. Despite a high poverty rate of nearly 50% in the region, many children had never been exposed to a computer five years ago and computer education was a rare commodity.
The turning point came with the introduction of the General Education Program in 2018, which made information technology a compulsory subject from the 3rd grade onwards. This enabled the school to acquire 25 computers and set up a computer lab, giving students an introduction to the digital world. IT teacher Bui Duc Thinh, who has been teaching at the school for eleven years, clearly remembers the students' first encounter with computers. Many of them were initially unsure about using technology and had difficulty understanding its basic functions.
Challenges and progress
Teacher Tran Thi Thao reports on the initial challenges at school, which often took place in makeshift classrooms without electricity or water. Despite these hurdles, the introduction of IT is seen as a significant step for education in mountainous regions. Students like Pham Hoang Nhien from Class 2A1 are already showing considerable success in IT exams and have acquired basic computer skills. His other talents include successful participation in national competitions in mathematics and Vietnamese.
The school is not only a place of learning, but also an example of positive change in the region. The Dao San boarding school is part of the “Sharing with teachers 2025” program, which aims to improve the living conditions of teachers in border areas. This program aims to develop a generation of confident and compassionate Vietnamese students.
